Dynamic DNS (DDNS) is a service that automatically updates the Domain Name System (DNS) records for a domain name whenever its IP address changes. This is particularly useful for users with dynamic IP addresses from their Internet Service Provider (ISP) because it ensures that the domain name always points to the correct IP address, even if it changes.

Here’s a quick overview of how it works:

  1. Dynamic IP Address: Many ISPs assign dynamic IP addresses that can change periodically. For example, your home internet connection might be assigned a new IP address every time your router reconnects to the ISP.

  2. DDNS Service: You register a domain name with a DDNS provider. The DDNS provider gives you software or a router configuration to update their DNS records.

  3. Update Mechanism: The DDNS software or router periodically checks your IP address. When it detects a change, it automatically updates the DDNS provider with the new IP address.

  4. DNS Resolution: When someone wants to access your domain name, the DDNS provider’s DNS servers return the current IP address, ensuring that users can always reach your server or device regardless of IP changes.

Common Use Cases:

  • Home Servers: If you run a home server or network-attached storage (NAS) and want to access it remotely.
  • Gaming: For hosting games or services where you need a consistent domain name.
  • Remote Access: Accessing security cameras or other remote devices from anywhere.

Popular DDNS Providers: Some well-known DDNS providers include DynDNS, No-IP, and DuckDNS. Many modern routers have built-in support for DDNS services, simplifying the setup process.
