There are 23 provinces in China. Each province has its own administrative structure:

  1. Anhui
  2. Beijing (Municipality directly under the central government)
  3. Chongqing (Municipality directly under the central government)
  4. Fujian
  5. Gansu
  6. Guangdong
  7. Guizhou
  8. Hainan
  9. Hebei
  10. Heilongjiang
  11. Henan
  12. Hubei
  13. Hunan
  14. Jiangsu
  15. Jiangxi
  16. Jilin
  17. Liaoning
  18. Qinghai
  19. Shaanxi
  20. Shandong
  21. Shanghai (Municipality directly under the central government)
  22. Shanxi
  23. Sichuan
  24. Taiwan (Claimed by China as a province but operates as a separate country with its own government and administration)
  25. Tianjin (Municipality directly under the central government)
  26. Xinjiang
  27. Xizang (Tibet)
  28. Yunnan
  29. Zhejiang

2. Autonomous Regions:

China has five autonomous regions that have a degree of administrative independence and are home to ethnic minority groups:

  1. Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
  2. Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region
  3. Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region
  4. Tibet Autonomous Region (Xizang)
  5. Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region

3. Municipalities:

There are four direct-controlled municipalities that are equivalent to provinces in terms of administrative status. They are directly governed by the central government:

  1. Beijing
  2. Chongqing
  3. Shanghai
  4. Tianjin

4. Special Administrative Regions (SARs):

These regions have a high degree of autonomy and are governed under the principle of "one country, two systems":

  1. Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR)
  2. Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR)
